Electric Boat Groton Shipyard
Groton performs final assembly and integration of Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines and builds central hull sections. In August 2026 Electric Boat (over 27,000 employees company-wide) planned about 2,250 new Groton positions after a $76.6 billion contract award on July 29, 2026.

Capital projects
Atlas floating dry dock for Columbia-class
Bollinger Shipyards was contracted in September 2020 to build a 618 by 140 ft floating dry dock for Electric Boat's Columbia-class program. The dock, named Atlas, arrived in Groton Jan. 3, 2026 and Electric Boat had begun using it by Jan. 8, 2026.
South Yard Assembly Building (SYAB) completion contract
In June 2020 Electric Boat awarded AECOM a $544 million contract to complete the 200,000 sq ft South Yard Assembly Building for Columbia-class final assembly (groundbreaking was September 2019), part of a $1.7 billion facilities program. By January 2026 the new Atlas floating dry dock was positioned beside the SYAB to align with its assembly bays.
