Methodology

How the index is built.

Sources

Every shipyard, program, and yard project carries the sources behind it, and every hull carries its own source link. We rely on Naval Sea Systems Command and Navy releases, Coast Guard and MARAD announcements, Department of Defense contract announcements, Congressional Research Service reports, budget documents, company releases, and trade and local press. Where sources disagree on a figure, we leave it blank rather than pick one.

Definitions

Shipyard: one physical yard that builds or repairs naval, Coast Guard, Army, MARAD, or large commercial vessels. Hull: one individual ship in a government program, tracked from order through delivery. In work: ordered, under construction, or launched but not yet delivered. Yard investment: a capital project at a yard announced in 2020 or later, such as a dry dock, assembly hall, or expansion.

Coverage and limits

Hulls cover active government programs plus ships delivered since January 2024. Yard locations are approximate. Workforce figures appear only where a source states them. Foreign-built hulls in U.S. programs are excluded.
